Sand Dollar Beds: Why They Live in Crowds

Sand dollars do not live scattered. They live in beds, patches of sandy bottom where the animals sit packed close together, at densities that reach hundreds per square meter in some populations. That crowding is what makes broadcast spawning work at all, it is where every empty test on the beach came from, and it is why walking through a bed does more damage than anything a visitor is likely to carry home.

What a Sand Dollar Bed Actually Is

Sand dollars do not live scattered. They live in beds: patches of sandy bottom where the animals sit close together, in the densest spots close enough to touch, with bottom that holds almost none of them a short distance away. If you learn one fact about how these animals live, learn this one. It explains most of the rest.

A bed is not a colony. Nothing is shared and nothing is built. Each animal feeds itself, moves itself and buries itself, and no individual depends on the one beside it the way a coral polyp depends on the colony around it. What holds a bed together is simpler than cooperation: every animal in it wants the same conditions, and those conditions occur in patches.

The edges can be sharper than you would expect. You can be over open sand with nothing in it and then, within a few feet, be over bottom where the animals are shoulder to shoulder. Depending on the species, beds run from water shallow enough to wade at low tide out to depths no swimmer will ever see.

The short version

How Dense a Bed Gets, and the Number We Will Not Give You

In some populations, densities reach hundreds of animals per square meter. That is the honest ceiling, and two words in it carry most of the weight: some populations.

Density varies by species and by place. It varies by depth, by season, and by which patch of bottom a surveyor happened to drop a frame onto. A figure measured on one coast in one study is a fact about that bed, not a constant for the animal. Anyone quoting a single tidy number for sand dollars in general is quoting one study and leaving out the part that says where it was taken.

We are not going to attach a number to any bed near Marco Island, and you should be wary of a page that does. Counting a bed is real work: going down with a quadrat, digging it out, and repeating that enough times for the result to mean anything. As far as we can find, nobody has published that work for our water. A page handing you a local population figure either did the survey and forgot to mention it, or made it up.

Hundreds per square meter, in some populations. That is what can be said.

Which of Ours Live This Way

Three sand dollars turn up in this part of the Gulf, and all three are animals of open sandy bottom.

  • Mellita tenuis H. L. Clark, 1940, the five-slotted sand dollar of the Gulf of Mexico, described from a type locality at Sanibel Island. It is the animal on our beaches, and it is not the Atlantic species most sources name it as. That correction gets a page of its own.
  • Leodia sexiesperforata, the six-holed keyhole urchin, ranging North Carolina to Uruguay, Florida and the Gulf included. Six slots rather than five.
  • Encope michelini, whose US Fish and Wildlife Service common name is the Notched Sand Dollar, on both Florida coasts and Gulf-wide. Its margin is notched rather than pierced clean through.

We are not going to hand you a table of the depth each one prefers and the density each one reaches. Those figures sit in the literature unevenly, and we have not checked them species by species against a primary source. The general statement holds for all three: sandy bottom, aggregated, not scattered.

Crowding Is the Reproductive Strategy

Sand dollars are broadcast spawners. Eggs and sperm go into open water, and fertilization happens out there in the current, with no contact between the animals at all. A fertilized egg becomes an echinopluteus, a small armed larva that drifts and feeds in the plankton before settling to the bottom and turning into something disc-shaped.

Consider what that strategy is up against. The moment sperm leaves the animal it begins diluting, and it keeps diluting, quickly, in every direction at once. Moving water is extremely good at taking two things that were near each other and making them no longer near each other. The chance of a sperm meeting an egg falls off steeply with the distance between the two animals that released them.

Which makes the bed the answer. An animal that cannot chase a mate, court one, or hold onto one has exactly one lever available, and that lever is proximity. Spawning into water that already holds a hundred neighbors' gametes is a completely different proposition from spawning alone on open sand, and it is the same proposition for every animal in the bed at once.

What triggers release, and how tightly a bed synchronizes it, we cannot tell you for our species. Broadcast spawners generally depend on some shared cue. Which cue these animals use has not been published as far as we can find.

What Holds a Bed Together Is Not Fully Settled

Reproduction explains why aggregating pays. It does not by itself explain how a bed forms in the first place, and the honest position is that several things are probably going on at once.

The candidates are not exotic. Sand of the right grain size is not everywhere. Neither is a current speed these animals can hold position in, nor a steady supply of the fine organic material they eat. A patch that satisfies all three will collect animals for reasons that have nothing to do with each other. On top of that, a larva has to choose somewhere to settle, and settling near adults is a sensible thing for a larva to do, since the presence of adults is evidence that the bottom works.

How much of each factor accounts for any given bed is not something we can hand you for Mellita tenuis, and we would rather say so than guess in print. The aggregation is the observation. The full causal account is not finished.

What a Bed Does to the Sand It Sits On

A sand dollar is a deposit feeder. It eats detritus and diatoms, the fine organic material and single-celled algae that coat sand grains and settle between them. Cilia and mucus move that material along grooves on the underside toward the mouth at the center. The mechanics of that deserve their own page, but the part that matters here is that grains are constantly being picked up, stripped and set back down.

Then there is the moving. Sand dollars burrow into the top layer of sand rather than resting on it, working with spines and tube feet together, and a juvenile goes further: it swallows sand grains and keeps them inside as ballast so a current cannot roll it away. Young animals in a bed are literally full of the sediment they live in.

Multiply that by every animal in a dense patch and the top layer of a bed stops being passive ground. It is worked over continuously by thousands of small animals that all make their living out of it.

What that adds up to, in sand moved per year or in any measured change to the sediment, is not a figure we have for this coast. We are not going to estimate one for you.

A Bed Is Where the Empty Tests Come From

Here is the part that pays a beachcomber back. Every sand dollar in a bed eventually dies, and what it leaves behind is the test: a fused plate skeleton about a millimeter thick. A bed is therefore a supply, producing empty tests continuously, in the water, off the beach you are standing on.

What happens next is physics. A test is a wide, thin, light disc, and in moving water a disc behaves less like a rock and more like a flat plate: easy to lift, easy to flip, easy to carry a long way. Waves and currents sort loose material by how it behaves in flow, which is why a beach is never randomly mixed. Light flat things end up somewhere different from heavy round ones. That sorting is what lines material up along the wrack line, out on shell bars and spits, and at the inside bends of passes.

So the map runs roughly like this: the bed is the source, the swash zone is the sorting machine, and the shell lines you walk are the output. It also explains the thing that frustrates people most. A thin rigid disc is close to the worst possible shape for surviving surf, so most tests break long before they reach dry sand. Why they break is a subject of its own. We will not draw you a line from a particular bed to a particular stretch of beach, because nobody has mapped that here.

Why "After a Storm" Is Not the Answer

The obvious next question is when that supply line runs. The honest answer is that the popular version of it has never been documented.

"Shelling is better after a storm" gets repeated everywhere and has not been shown. Storms move enormous quantities of material, which is true and is exactly the problem: a storm can bury a beach as easily as strip one, and it can do both on the same coast on the same day. Storms change things. The direction of the change is not predictable.

Wind carries a similar catch. A moderate west wind here is close to straight onshore, and it does push material shoreward. But a strong or prolonged west wind causes wind setup, piling water against the coast and shrinking the flat you were hoping to walk. West wind is good up to a ceiling and then stops being good. Anyone who tells you west wind is simply good has not stood in enough of it.

What Low Water Over a Bed Looks Like

Most beds sit in water that never uncovers. What a visitor actually meets is the shallow edge of one, on a flat at low tide, and that is a specific thing to know how to look at.

Marco Island runs a mixed tide: two unequal highs and two unequal lows in a tidal day, and near the monthly extremes one of them can nearly vanish. Mean tidal range is roughly 2.2 feet. Running a full year of NOAA predictions for this island shows about 21% of the lows in 2026 falling below chart datum, clustered November through February and nearly absent July through September. Winter's best lows come in the morning and summer's in the evening. Those are predictions, not readings: the Marco Island station is a harmonic one with no live water-level sensor. Which lows uncover the most ground, and when, is a full page of its own.

On the ground, in shin-deep water or on sand just uncovered, a bed does not look like animals arranged on a table. It looks like texture. Half-buried animals read as faint circular seams in the surface, or as shallow dimples about the width of a drink coaster, sometimes with a dark edge showing where one sits tipped rather than flat. Some hold edge-on into the current. And they are patchy: a stretch of nothing, then several inside an arm's length.

How to Tell You Are Standing Near One

Three checks, and none of them takes long.

  • Color. A living sand dollar is dark: brown, purple, gray or green, never white, and furred all over with short dense spines that move. A bone white disc is a test and that animal has been gone a while. The full alive-or-dead check takes about ten seconds.
  • The stain. Set one on a wet palm and wait. A live animal leaves a yellow mark within about a minute. The pigment is echinochrome, it is harmless to you, and nothing dead will ever do it.
  • Count the neighbors. This is the check people skip. Because these animals aggregate, a live one is rarely alone. If you have found one, look at the sand within a step or two of your feet before you take that step. Where there is one there are usually more, and most of them are under the surface where you cannot see them at all.

That third check is the point of this page. A single live sand dollar is not really a find. It is information about where you are standing.

Walking Through a Bed Is the One Thing That Really Costs Something

Here is the mechanism, plainly, once.

A test is roughly a millimeter thick. The living animal sits in the top layer of sand, which puts it directly under the sole of a shoe. Wet packed sand does not cushion a footstep, it transmits one. An adult's body weight landing on a disc that thin breaks it, and the animal cannot get out of the way, because a sand dollar moves on spines and tube feet at a pace you measure against a clock, not against a footstep.

The part that matters is that you will not know. Nothing crunches through a wet sole, nothing surfaces, and the sand closes over it. A person can cross a bed, feel nothing at all, and leave a line of broken animals behind them. That is what makes this the one genuinely destructive thing a casual visitor can do without ever realizing it, and it deserves more attention than anything anybody puts in a bucket.

So the ask is small. If you find a live sand dollar, stop where you are. Look at the sand within a couple of steps. Then go back out the way you came in, over ground you have already looked at, instead of walking on through. That is the whole of it.

What the Law Says, and Where It Stops

One sentence in Florida statute 379.101(34) governs most of this. It defines "saltwater fish" to include living mollusks and echinoderms and expressly excludes nonliving shells. A sand dollar is an echinoderm. So a live one is regulated the way a fish is, and taking it requires a Florida recreational saltwater fishing license, while an empty test is not saltwater fish at all and needs nothing.

Whether any numeric collecting limit applies to sand dollars in Florida is genuinely unsettled. Two independent readings of the rules came back disagreeing with each other. We are not going to publish a number, because a confidently published wrong number is precisely how bad shelling facts spread. We have asked FWC in writing, and the answer goes on this page when it arrives.

Several things are not ambiguous. On City of Marco Island beaches, city code section 54-36(o) prohibits live shelling, and section 54-36(k) separately prohibits removing sand from the beach. Florida State Parks prohibit removing shells, sand, rocks or marine animals from any park area, empty shells included. Collecting is prohibited outright in Everglades National Park and in Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. None of that speaks to what your feet do on the way, which is the thing this page is about.

How We Handle Beds on Our Trips

Aboard our boat the rule is our own and it is short: empty shells only. No live shells, no live sand dollars, no negotiating over one that looks mostly dead. It is the only version of the rule that survives contact with wet hands and children.

Beds get handled before anyone is out of the boat. A captain working the same ground season after season learns where the animals are thick, and that knowledge is for keeping people off them, not for walking people onto them. Where the boat sits, where people step out, and which direction they walk from there are decisions somebody makes on purpose.

Some of the water we run through sits inside the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, whose rule appears to be stricter than empty shells only. We are confirming that with the Reserve rather than guessing at it in public, which is why this page does not tell you what you may pick up on any particular island.

What can be said is that a crushed test is not repairable and that animal is finished, and that the animals in a bed are the local supply of both larvae and, eventually, the empty tests that reach the beach. That is reason enough to walk around one rather than through it.
